What you're buying

In plain words first. The formal terms are underneath, and they say the same thing.

One payment. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically.

Carol keeps reminding your parent for as long as their phone works. That part never expires, never needs the internet, and does not stop if you never hear from us again.

The family side — the console, your messages, the weekly email — is supported for at least three years from the day you buy.

The two halves, and why they differ

Carol is two things. One of them lives entirely on your parent's phone and costs us nothing to keep running. The other runs on our computers and costs us money every year, so we are only willing to promise it for a period we can honestly commit to.

There is nothing at our end that can switch the reminders off. They run on the phone she is already installed on. They need no internet and nothing from us — not a server, not a subscription, not a company. Very few things you can buy work that way, and it is deliberate.

Being straight about the edge of that: phones and operating systems change, and we cannot promise she will survive a new handset in ten years' time. What we can promise is that she will not stop because of anything at our end.

After three years

We may ask whether you would like to keep the family side going. If you say no, or if you never reply, the reminders carry on exactly as before. Carol will not be switched off, and your parent will never see a message asking them to pay for anything.

We will always write to you, the person who bought it — not to them.

Refunds

Thirty days, no questions, no forms. Email hello@carolsays.com.au and we will refund you.

And if circumstances change, so will we. If your parent dies, moves into care, or can no longer use Carol, tell us and we will refund the unused part. There will be no retention offer and nobody will try to talk you out of it. If you would rather keep the messages your family wrote, we will send them to you instead of deleting them.

If that happens, here is how to stop everything — without waiting on us.

The weekly email: there is a link at the bottom of every one. One click. No log-in, no form, no reason required, and it never starts again by itself.

Carol on their phone: delete the app. That stops it completely and immediately.

The refund, and the messages your family wrote: from your account, whenever you get to it. There is no deadline on it and nobody will chase you.

We have built it this way on purpose. You should not have to email a stranger and wait for a reply in the week you are arranging a funeral.

What Carol is not

Carol is not a medical device, a monitoring service, or an emergency system.

She does not know whether anything was taken, only whether your parent answered her. She cannot detect a fall, call an ambulance, or tell you that something is wrong. If you need those things, you need something else — and an Apple Watch does fall detection properly.

She is not a medication record. You write the wording yourself, in your own words. Carol stores what you typed and whether the button was pressed. Nothing else.

If there is any chance of your parent doubling up on medicines, use a weekly pill box. Carol cannot know whether a dose has been taken. The box can.

Your parent's part in this

Carol tells your parent, in her own voice on the first day, that she passes on what the family types and that you will know when they have answered. They are told, in plain words, rather than through a form nobody reads.

They can also give her a rest. There is a control on their phone that quiets Carol for three days, after which she starts again by herself. You will be told if they use it. It is their phone.

Privacy

We store your parent's first name, the wording you write, the times you choose, and whether the button was pressed. We do not store medicine names, doses, health records, or location, and the app does not ask the phone for them.

Photographs are chosen from your parent's own phone and never leave it.
